Horse Inspection Steward

You will assist in the planning and setting up of the horse inspection area and procedures. You will ensure that the horse inspection runs on time and according to the rules. You can do this job without prior knowledge or experience. You will receive on-the-job training by an Event Official. Being comfortable around horses is helpful but not a necessity. Good managerial, organizational and interpersonal skills with a cheerful but firm attitude are required.

Dressage Steward

You will be responsible for helping to organize and train the dressage volunteers; warm-up stewards, bit-check, & ring stewards. Experience in working at Dressage competitions is helpful. This position calls for a person with good management and interpersonal skills. If you don’t know the competition rules, we can provide you with training.

Difficulty of Work: Physical Demands: Ability to work long hours in most any weather with cheerful attitude. Stand, walk, carry 20 lb., and rake

Working Conditions: Irregular hours, outdoors

Dressage Scribe

You will write (record) the Dressage Judges' marks and comments on the tests. Clear, easy to read handwriting is helpful. To scribe at a competition you must have experience, however, training is available. Scribes need to have a friendly, cooperative attitude.

Arena Steward

You will be assigned an arena or arena(s) that you will be responsible for. You will help competitors find their correct arena and keep them updated as to the show time schedule letting them know how many horses go in before their ride. You will need to check in on your judge(s) and scribe(s) and make sure they are happy and have what they need. You don’t need prior experience for this position and can receive on-the-job training.

In-Gate Steward

Opening and closing the In-gate to the Competition Arena before and after each ride during International Competitions. The gate weighs less than 5 pounds and is made out of PVC. This position is essential to the smooth running of competitions. You don’t need prior experience for this position and can receive on-the-job training.

Collecting Ring Steward

You will oversee the Collecting Ring and facilitate the flow of competitors from the warm-up area into the Collection Ring before competitors go into the competition arena. You will communicate with the Warm-up Stewards to ensure the coordination of the progression of riders from the Warm-up area to the Collecting Ring. You will need to make sure unauthorized personnel are excluded from this area and ensure that the separation of the Collecting Ring from the Mixed Zone is preserved. You will need to be firm but pleasant with people. You don’t need prior experience for this position and can receive on-the-job training.

Warm-up Steward

You will ensure the smooth progression of competitors through your warm-up arenas to the Collecting Ring. You will need to observe that proper schooling practices are in use, help competitors find their competition arena and inform them how many rides away they are from their schedule time. In case of emergency, you will be responsible for summoning the necessary assistance and notifying the appropriate people. You don’t need prior experience for this position and can receive on-the-job training.

Dressage Ring Crew

You will help maintain the Competition Arena(s) and final Warm-Up Arena (s) by making sure the arenas stay in tact during the competition, marking the center line during breaks, if needed, and responding to any emergencies in the competition arenas, judge's huts and surrounding area. You don’t need prior experience for this position and can receive on-the-job training.

Chief Jump Judge

This is a very important job which requires coordination of all the Cross-Country volunteers. You will work directly with the Volunteer Coordinator who will gather volunteers for your needs. You will make all volunteer placement assignments (with help of the Event Director, if needed) for the cross-country or marathon phase of competition. You will need strong leadership and organizational skills with a friendly but firm attitude. You will be involved with briefing and debriefing volunteers with staff members. You will help in ordering and assembling materials needed by the cross country volunteers.

Working Conditions: Outdoors

Jump Judge

There will be one or two Judges at each obstacle on cross-country. They will be responsible for assessing penalties at obstacles, responding properly and promptly in the case of emergency, and for ensuring that the area around the obstacle is clear when each competitor approaches. You don’t need prior experience for this position and can receive on-the-job training. The ability to remain calm in emergencies is helpful.

Cross-Country Controller

This job requires multitasking skills. You will be responsible for managing the communications during the Cross-Country phase of competition. You will maintain control of all activities on the cross-country course, working directly with the announcer. You must know where each horse is on course at any given time. You will also be responsible for receiving radio requests from cross-country volunteers and transmitting those requests to the appropriate people. This will range from someone needing a bathroom break to a jump judge needing medical assistance due to a fall of horse and/or rider. It’s a bit like an air traffic controller. You will need to be able to stay calm during a crisis as well as helping calm others down.

Gate Judges - Phase A and C

You will observe and record the passage of the competitors through their assigned Gates by writing them down in a score book and will transmit the information via radio. If you have an emergency at or around your gate, you will need to summon help by radio. You don’t need prior experience for this position and can receive on the job training.

D Box Steward & C Halt Steward

These are two similar jobs but in separate locations. Each location will require one Steward. You will manage the procedures in the D Box and at the C-Halt. You will respond to the officials’ and competitors' needs in the D Box and C Halt Areas. You will supervise the staff and volunteers assigned to the areas and ensure that each official and competitor receives the proper assistance and is properly timed throughout the areas. You will oversee and monitor these areas, ensure any emergency needs of the competitor are quickly and efficiently met, monitor the water and ice supplies and request replenishment as needed, supervise the staff working with the vets, farrier and medical response teams, & dispatch any emergency support needed. Experience for this position is helpful but not required. You will need to have a strong personality with the ability to make quick decisions, not be afraid to ask for help and not let people push you around. You will be hands-on with horses at times.

D-Box & C-Halt Timers

You will be in charge of timing each competitor when they enter C-Halt or the D-Box, keeping the competitor informed as to the amount of time remaining before his/her scheduled start on their next phase. You will meet the competitors as they enter the C-Halt or D-Box and stay with them advising them of their time. You will advise them as to how much longer they have in the box, notify the rider when their Start time is for the next phase and if there is any change in the schedule or holds on the course. You don’t need prior experience for this position and can receive on-the-job training.

D Box Veterinary Assistants

You will assist the vets in the operation of the D Box. You will help take and record temperatures, pulse and respirations when horses finish Cross-Country. You will need experience handling horses and it’s helpful if you have some knowledge of taking temperatures and respirations. Specific equestrian sport knowledge is not essential.

Cross-Country Timers

We will need a Start Timing Crew and a Finish Timing Crew. Each crew will also have a scribe to help write down times and scores. You will be responsible for recording either start or finish time for each competitor. The Start Box will need to be in radio contact with warm-up to keep horses moving up to the start so the printed schedule is adhered to. You will radio Control when a competitor has started on course, you may be required to hold the start if instructed by Control in case of emergency. Once you start a horse, you must record the competitor’s number and actual time of start. Finish will need to be in radio contact with Control so they can report when a horse completes the course and must record the competitor’s number and actual time of crossing the finish. You don’t need prior experience for this position and can receive on-the-job training.

Area and Sector Stewards

You will be assigned an area of the competition course to monitor the progress of the competition and to assist with any situation or emergency that comes up. If your area is assigned a Crew, you will coordinate their movement and response as per briefing information. You will need to have a cool head in emergencies and a strong, firm but pleasant attitude. You don’t need prior experience for this position and can receive on-the-job training.

Stopping Stewards

You will be responsible for stopping competitors on course at an assigned Stopping Location and keeping accurate track of the duration of the Hold in the event of a Hold on course. You will need to have the ability to yell loudly, jump up and down and generally move so you get the attention of the competitor on course you need to stop. You don’t need prior experience for this position and can receive on-the-job training.

Crowd Control

You will take responsibility for a crossing or area in which you will maintain control of crowds on the course, ensuring that they do not interfere with the horses in competition. You will alert spectators when horses are coming so they can move off the course and generally manage crowds to ensure their safety and that of the competitors. You don’t need prior experience for this position and can receive on-the-job training.

Score Collectors

You will be responsible for collecting score sheets from your assigned area(s) in a timely manner and for making certain all score sheets get delivered to the scorers. This is an important job with a lot of responsibility. You will ensure timely scoring of results for competitors. You don’t need prior experience for this position and can receive on-the-job training.

Difficulty of Work: Physical Demands: Must have a current driver’s license; be able to drive a golf cart, four-wheeler or similar type of vehicle in any kind of weather and over varied terrain.

Show Jumping Steward

You will oversee the Show Jumping phase of competition. You will assign and monitor Show Jumping volunteer personnel & coordinate the set-up, adjustment of jumps between divisions and takedown of jumps for competition and warm-up. You will need to make sure the Course Designer and Judges are provided with proper equipment. You will brief volunteer Ring Crew and Warm-Up Steward coordinating how to move horses from warm-up into the arena and out while thinking about safety. You don’t need prior experience for this position and can receive on-the-job training.

Ring Crew

You will be responsible to set and to reset the jumps for the Show Jumping competition under guidance of the Event Officials. You will reset jumps that are knocked down during competition and make sure the footing is in good form and repair if needed. This is a physical job that requires some heavy lifting and raking. You don’t need prior experience for this position and can receive on-the-job training.
